Ron Sexsmith

Cuz when you're new on the block and someone's nice to you, very soon, you forget that you are new................Cuz on that very first day in my neighbourhood, someone said, "Hello."

This is a song that Ron learned from his daughter derived from her watching, "Sesame Street."  The song is called, "On The Very First Day", and as Ron is about to sing it, he expresses how very special the song is.  I agree with him and the manner in which Ron sings it is bound to incite some smiles and warmth of heart! Ron sings it with a purity that is so tender, sweet, and nurturing that I can feel my heartstrings being pulled!  BTW, Ron, the song is from, "People In Your Neighbourhood", and it is out of print.

Hi Maria, thanks for posting!  It was great to hear First Day live and the background in the introduction.

I've always felt that Ron's music and lyrics reflect the open/clear imagination we have as children.  I love how he documents the encounter with his young son and the older couple on the bus in Pretty Little Cemetary: "that's where you go when you die, my pa told my so."  "Yes, we know".  That just knocks me out!  Then there's my all time Ron Sexsmith favorite, Galbraith Street, a kind of goodby to childhood:

"So many goodbyes to speak of in a life
But none compared to the goodbyes I said there.

The sun went down on Galbraith Street
I saw it from my childhood bed
As the red and gold brick houses stood
Underneath a crimson sky that bled"

I still choke up every time I listen to that one.  There's nobody out there in poopular music writing stuff like this.  What a gem he is!

Hi Rainbow Bridge!  Thank you so much for sharing examples of what I felt from the very beginning when listening to Ron's songs.  It's nice to communicate with someone who gets this sentiment so well!  What I am referring to is the very first reply I posted on this forum, I stated that Ron is a peacemaker for children and we are all brilliant children at the core.:) Ron's music is freeing in countless respects and it is pretty special how he continues to shine light on the clarity of vision and understanding that children have and how precious this is to keep alive/growing with love.  I agree with you in that, "There's nobody out there in popular music writing stuff like this and what a gem he is!"
